Different Eyes, Different Procedures

Several different types of refractive surgeries are commonly referred to as “laser eye surgery,” so it’s easy to see why people assume there’s only one procedure. But the reality is, every eye is different, so there are various surgery types to accommodate those unique differences.

PRK

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) was one of the first laser corrective operations available. Using lasers, ophthalmologists remove tissue from the surface of the eye and change the shape of the underlying cornea.

Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most commonly performed corrective surgery. Rather than cutting tissue directly from the eye’s surface, the surgeon cuts a hinged flap in the surface of the eye and folds it back. They then reshape your cornea using a laser and replace the flap.

Instead of cutting a thicker flap, laser epithelial keratomileusis (LASEK) combines PRK and LASIK procedures. It involves cutting a very thin flap in the outer cornea, the underlying cornea is then reshaped, and the flap is replaced when the procedure is finished.

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) replaces a patient’s natural lens with a manufactured lens implant. This procedure is commonly used in the case of cataracts.
